Homemade Waterer

We got a used waterer for free that would retail $35. It isn't working. So, with a little research on the internet and helpful tips we decided to spend $16 for new parts to make a homemade waterer but you can get similar parts for under $10 or free if you're creative.

We went to our local feed store and purchased a 5 gallon bucket with a handle and a lid as well as a large feed tray. We drilled a few holes at the base of the bucket and placed it in the feed tray. Place the whole thing on top of some blocks to prop it up and there you have it: a homemade chicken waterer.

This beautiful and young Black Australorp rooster is settling in but he will be going to a new home. We only have room for one or no roosters.

Coop Location

We decided to move the nearly finished hen house from the top of the leech field, underneath a tree, into the backyard and facing South. This was not an easy task. Choosing the right location is important in our severe weather. The tree location was excellent for the summer but it was boggy and would be cold during the freezing temperatures. The new South facing location offers better warmth for both the ground and the hen house. Because it is in our backyard there is a better chance of protecting them from the wild but we have to watch the dogs.
